Large and mid-cap funds must hold at least 35% in large-caps and 35% in mid-caps, with the rest flexible. The category was created by SEBI in the 2017 re-categorisation to give investors a way to express a 'core plus growth' tilt without picking two separate funds. The expected return is meaningfully above pure large-cap, the expected drawdown is meaningfully above pure large-cap, and the typical holding period for a sensible return is 5+ years. A common portfolio pattern is a large-cap index fund plus a mid-cap fund, but large & mid-cap is the single-fund version of that pair. How to read this table. Compare the 5-year return to the BSE 150 MidCap index plus the Nifty 50, weighted 50-50. A fund that beats that blended benchmark consistently is generating alpha; one that trails it is just blending the two indices with expense ratio drag.
Each Large & Mid Cap fund in the table is scored on a blend of five factors: 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year returns, the 3-year Sharpe ratio, and the 3-year maximum drawdown. The 5-year return carries the heaviest weight; the 1-year return carries the lightest, because a single year is mostly noise. Funds with less than three years of history are kept out of the 3Y / 5Y windows but are still listed if they have a 1-year track record.
The underlying NAV data is sourced nightly from the AMFI daily NAV file and the AMC factsheets. The score is re-run every month after the latest upload. Two funds with a score within 5 points of each other are essentially interchangeable for retail purposes; pick from the top 3-5 names in the list, not just the top 1. The full formula, weights, and edge cases are in the rankings methodology post.

Some large & mid-cap funds behave like enhanced large-cap (60% large / 35% mid), others like watered-down mid-cap (35% large / 60% mid). The actual split is the main lever; check the portfolio page on the AMC site or the monthly factsheet.
